THIRD LARGEST TAXIDERMY COLLECTION IN THE UNITED STATES.

Just a quick throwback to that time we were driving by Athens, Tennessee and saw a sign for the THIRD LARGEST TAXIDERMY COLLECTION IN THE UNITED STATES. Without even discussing it, Jordyn sighed and said “fine,” as Justin headed towards the off ramp.

It turned out the THIRD LARGEST TAXIDERMY COLLECTION IN THE UNITED STATES was not only the THIRD LARGEST TAXIDERMY COLLECTION IN THE UNITED STATES but a pawn shop and gun store. Who knew!

Baby Cakes

Gary Hathcox’s boat is named after his grandson’s first words: “Baby Cakes.” His other boat is named “Sheila Baby,” after his wife. The two boats make up Gary’s fleet; a good day on the water can bring in over 5,000 pounds of clams.

But things haven’t always been smooth sailing for Gary’s fleet. 20 years ago a controversial ban on net fishing changed the makeup of the fishing community, forcing nets nine miles offshore and crippling the commercial industry. Many of the fishers we spoke with - most of whom were third or fourth generation fishers - were forced to change tacts completely.

Some, like Gary’s crew, turned to aquaculture - and began cultivating and harvesting clams.

Here a fourth-generation fisher moves clams on the boat - and begrudgingly acknowledges the camera - while his fellow clam harvesters prepare to tumble the days catch.

Ozello, Florida

Born in 1934 on her family’s farm outside of Gainesville, she’s seen it all. She moved to Tallahassee when she was 18, and Jacksonville following college. In 1992 she and her husband retired to the remote fishing key of Ozello. But, she was quick to tell us, things are changing on her small island.

“It’s getting busier,” she said as she gestured towards the newest of three restaurants on the island. “Developers want to build a row of condos … and we don’t want that traffic. But we’ll make do, we always have. My generation is - some newscaster called us the greatest generation. Who was that, Walter Cronkite? We’ll make do. We always do.”
